Installing or Replacing a Range Hood Appliance, Wall Vent & Duct in Georgetown TX

Range hoods are a really quite a convenient appliance. You don’t realize how wonderful this little gem is until you have had one, and then suddenly do not. Range hoods ventilate the heat and smoke or steam from stove-top cooking or from the oven with an internal fan and filter, and often comes with an extra light source for your cooking pleasure. Range hoods are generally purchased in conjunction with a stove, but can be bought separately. Good news if you need to replace your range hood!

Texas Appliance Repair would like to guide you through the range hood installing process.

A few tips on purchasing your new range hood. You want to make sure the hood is large enough to cover the top of your stove, better if the hood extends an inch over all four corners of your stovetop. The space between the stovetop and range hood should be a minimum of 24 inches apart. A hood equipped with a CFM (cubic feet per minute) rating of 400 is top notch. One with 250 CFM is fair. That’s the capability of smoke and steam the fan and ventilation is able to suck up. To know what your kitchen needs minimally, multiply your kitchen’s square feet by two. Ensure the same vent system is the same as your old hood for easy hookups.

1. If you are replacing, you need to start by removing the old range hood. Unfasten all the wires close to the light fixture of the old hood by unscrewing all the wired nuts and separate the connections. You will need an assistant to firmly hold the hood while you loosen the screws that hold the hood in place. Lift the hood cautiously and place the hood down and remove the screws.
2. When installing the new range hood, be sure to always follow manufacturer’s instructions. The instructions generally include a template to mark where the vent is needed to be cut out. An additional cut out for electrical work may be needed. Remember, electricity isn’t to be taken lightly. If you do not have any experience in this field, hire a professional.
3. Using a drill or wallboard saw, cut the space for the vent. Be careful not to hit any studs or piping. If the area is clear, give yourself a high five. If there are obstacles, it is best to call a professional appliance repairman as the work can be tricky if you are inexperienced.
4. Range Hood Installation: Using the template, mark inside the holes for screwing. Drill on the wall mounting brackets in the appropriate areas. Make sure the vent and screw hole are aligning before securing. Connect the wiring for the fan and lights.
5. Reattach the filters and grease backboards. Replace the hood cover and fasten down with the screws.
6. Reset the power, and test out your light and fan switch.
7. Give yourself a well earned pat on the back and cross off that task off your “to do” list.
